Some people know at a very young age what they want to be when they grow up. I
had a friend in high school who always wanted to be a pilot. He never talked about
being anything else. He just wanted to be a pilot. He got top grades in high school,
went to college and became a pilot.
Some people have a much more difficult time discovering what they want to be when they grow up. In my case, I wanted to do everything. I still haven't really found anything that doesn't interest me. Everything is an opportunity to learn something new. When it came time to decide on a career, I chose to go to school for Business Management. I felt I had a good mind for business, and it was practical. Having a career as outlandish as, say, being an author was never even a consideration. You can't pay the bills if you are a starving writer. Besides, I never even thought I was capable of writing a novel. I didn't even like to read novels.
It wasn't until my brother, Dustin, bought me the first six books of the Harry Potter series for Christmas in 2006 that I found my love for reading. Strangely, until that point, I could read a manual or a newspaper and enjoy myself much more than reading a novel. It was that year that my love for reading fiction was sparked, and I never looked back.
Still, I never really set out to be a writer. Even when the first idea for a story came to me, I really wasn't confident I could write it. But I tried. I sat down at my computer, and I wrote the first chapter, which later needed to be rewritten, several times. By the time I had finished the first chapter, I had started to learn my style, and my voice, and I began to feel more comfortable with the idea of writing an actual novel. I began mapping out where I wanted the story to go, what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it. Then, I just wrote. I wrote on my lunch breaks, and in the evenings and on the weekends. When I wasn't working or spending time with the family, I was writing. And...I loved it. Before I knew it, I had idea after idea after idea. I started creating separate notebooks with a different story idea in each one. I would develop it enough to leave it, and then I would go back to my primary project, In My Shoes.
I am pleased to say, that after a year of writing, and 6 months of editing, In My Shoes was released. At 37 years old, my first book had been published. I am excited to see where it goes from here.
